Count Carl von Cosel was obsesses with a tuberculosis patients at the sanitarium where he worked. Her name was Maria Elena de Hoyos, a beautiful 22 year old woman. Maria passed away very soon but that did not stop von Cosel’s morbid obsession with her. He built a mausoleum for her in the nearby cemetery and preserved her in formaldehyde so he could sit and have conversations with her.
Two years after her death, he illegally dug her up from her tomb and took her home with him. He attached her bones with piano wires and coat hangers, he bough preservatives and perfumes to keep her “fresh” and even stuffed her body with rags to keep the original shape. His obsession was clearly not over. Necrophilia also came into the picture.
He continued with this morbid obsession for 7 years until de Hoyo’s sister came across the body. She reported it to the authorities and the count was arrested. He was set free due to the statute of limitations running out on his grave robbing.
He moved to Florida and de Hoyo was buried somewhere unknown and unmarked. Upon the count’s death he was found in a room with a large doll in his arms that was wearing Elena’s death mask.
